To mark the 70th anniversary of the British North Greenland Expedition, Tudor introduces the new Ranger.
The two-year scientific mission studying ice sheets in Greenland started on the 8th July 1952. Members of the expedition comprising of mainly British scientists and sailors were equipped with the brand-new Oyster Prince model that were both automatic and waterproof. These 30 watches were put to test in extreme conditions with temperatures as low as -66.1°C (-87°F), a world record at the time, to conduct the in-depth glaciological and seismic surveys during the British North Greenland Expedition. The expedition team was asked to record performance data for the watches in an unprecedented field test for the 30 Oyster Prince watches that would be worn under extreme conditions.

The British North Greenland Expedition was one of the very first long-term tests conducted in real-world extreme conditions, implemented by the brand for its tool watches. The members of the expedition monitored variations in the precision of their Oyster Prince watches against the hourly signals emitted by the BBC, and recorded them in notebooks specifically provided for this purpose. To withstand the harsh conditions, TUDOR watches sent for this project were specially lubricated with “arctic” oil and provided with bracelet extensions so the watches could be worn over the sleeves of the parkas. Suffice to say, the Oyster Prince passed with flying colours. One of the members of the expedition wrote in a letter to TUDOR that his watch “was maintaining a remarkable accuracy” and that only “on occasion did it require to be wound by hand”.

The new TUDOR Ranger comes complete with a chronometer COSC-certified Manufacture Calibre MT5402 with a 70-hour power reserve. Also, the keen eye will notice a hint of historical influence in that the hour markers are painted in a beige-colored luminescent material which perfectly contrasts with the grained, matt black dial. The arrow-shaped hands, rounded for the hours hand and angular for the seconds hand, are characteristic of Ranger aesthetics, with a unique touch – the tip of the seconds hand is coated in burgundy. In comparison to its predecessor, the Heritage Ranger launched in 2014, the TUDOR Ranger’s 39mm case is both compact and sits comfortably on the wrist.

The TUDOR Ranger is available in a variety of styles – choose from a satin-brushed steel bracelet, with the brand’s new “T-fit” clasp equipped with a rapid adjustment system of up to 8mm; a black hybrid leather and rubber strap or a heritage-inspired fabric strap in olive green with red and beige stripes.
